DISPUTE OF THE BELL TOWER IN EPINEAU-LES-VOVES

The vicars of Epineau sought long and hard to leave Épineau and settle at les Voves. In 1667, a flood devastated the village, prompting the vicar to leave Epineau for good.

«Le village of Epineau no longer having more than three homesteads, of an often impossible access in winter, distant from 2 kilomètres from les Voves where almost all the population lives ; it's harmful to impose on the faithful to attend the mass in a Church situated in an almost vanished village and the bells of which are no longer heard (…/…) ».

After en inquiry, he was granted permission to temporarily transport the Holy Sacrament, some Holy Water and the Holy Oils in the Chapel Of Voves. But the Lord of the country liked the ancient church where his family arms and burial places were situated. To convince him and make him give up was a hard job.

Supported by the inhabitants of the Voves, the vicar eventually won and stayed at les Voves nevertheless.

ot-migennes A GEM OF ROMANESQUE ART IN LAROCHE-SAINT-CYDROINE

A GEM OF ROMANESQUE ART IN LAROCHE-SAINT-CYDROINE

Towards the end of the XIth century, Benedictine monks from the order of Cluny came and founded a priory : of this prosperous priory, destroyed for the most part during the French Revolution, little remains but the church, the construction of which was completed in 1111. Classified as "Historic Monument" since 1905, it has been restored several times over the years.

Of Romanic style, this monument contains three apses, one of which is a barrel-groined vault, a transept and a nave - the nave was largely modified during the XVth century -. What makes this church so original is the octagonal tower above the square transept. The architect went from a square layout to octagonal design through the use of corner squinches.

The vault of the choir was made more attractive by frescoes in the XIIth century.  Parts ot the frescoes have survived the centuries and can still be seen. Capitals are decorated with an amazing variety of animals and plants.
